EHOBO, Inc. is a 501(c)(3) non-profit organization whose mission is to educate the Congolese population so that they may learn proper nutrition and basic survival techniques.

The Congo, formerly Zaire, is a country located in Central Africa. Roughly one-quarter the size of the United States, the population is approximately 60 million. Government corruption and civil war has resulted in social collapse and wide-spread poverty.

EHOBO has been a leader in medicinal and nutritional attainment in the Democratic Republic of the Congo since 2007. Through private fundraising and local donations, our board has had the opportunity to create a network of families whom we serve. Currently EHOBO cares for 268 families, 268 mothers and 481 children under the age of seven.

History & Founders

EHOBO's mission is to reduce the rate of premature deaths in children less than seven years of age in the Democratic Republic of the Congo with the help of local trained professionals (nutritionists, nurses, and doctors) by providing emergency medical care for children and educating their mothers on nutrition and childcare techniques that increase their likelihood of survival. WHAT IT LOOKS LIKE:The mothers in our programs are given a full tutorial on child care and development. EHOBO provides a demonstration of local food preparation for mothers and their children. There is a monthly follow up by a trained health care professional in home until the child reaches school age. The goal is for mothers to maximize their limited resources in order to provide better child care. Providing their children with proper nutrition and hygiene will help them avoid contracting waterborne and other preventable childhood diseases which in turn will decrease the rate of childhood mortalities within the families we serve, and in the Democratic Republic of the Congo as a whole. Education is at the heart of Empowering Humanity One By One, as we believe that empowerment begins by teaching those with little how to provide much for their children. Each mother in our program takes the training she received through EHOBO, Inc. and shares her knowledge with others in need in DRC. This kind of education will enable the Congolese population to be the change they hope to see in their country one family at a time.
Gustave KN Mbuy, Ph.D. Dr. Mbuy was one of nine children born in the Catholic Mission of Mayi Munene, Tshikapa, Congo. One of his siblings died at six months due to poor health conditions-conditions similar to the ones that EHOBO helps eradicate. Though his family had meager finances, Dr. Mbuy was fortunate to attend school. Attending school meant leaving his family at an early age of eight and living with uncles who ensured he received the best elementary and secondary education they could afford. He was schooled by the American Presbyterian missionaries in Ndesha, Bibanga, and Katubue.After graduating from the Presbyterian high school, Dr. Mbuy was awarded a college scholarship. The African Scholarship Program for American Universities (ASPAU) brought him to the United States of America. In the U.S., he attended the University of California in Los Angeles (UCLA) where he graduated with a bachelor of arts in microbiology. He later obtained both a masters and a doctoral degree in medical microbiology, with a specialty in virology from the University of Cincinnati. For the last 21 years, Dr. Mbuy has been a researcher and professor of virology at West Chester University of Pennsylvania. Dr. Mbuy is married to Julienne with whom they have four children, three daughters, one son, and two grandsons. Having lived through civil wars from 1960-1964 in his native Congo, Dr. Mbuy is very conscious of the daily human suffering the Congolese endure. His personal history and background, philanthropic affiliation (Rotary International), academic training, and research interests all fuel his dedication to EHOBO.Julienne B.Muntu-Mbuy Mrs. Julienne Mbuy was born in the Congo at Catholic mission of Bonzolu where her father, the late Gregoire Ntukula Muntu, was a teacher. Her mother completed the second grade when she was 12 and married her father at the tender age of 13. Of the five siblings born, one died shortly after birth due to poor conditions in Congo. Mrs. Mbuy received her primary education and a portion of her secondary education in Catholic school. However, her secondary education was temporarily halted in 1971 when she married Dr. Mbuy and joined him in the United States. Once in the U.S., Mrs. Mbuy graduated from Hughes High School in 1973, and later attended Cincinnati State in Ohio where she worked at the university hospital blood bank and received a degree in medical technology.When Mrs. Mbuy moved to Philadelphia with her husband and four children, it became very difficult for her to work hospital shifts due to her family's needs. However, it was at this time that she was introduced to social services.Working with abused and less fortunate children gave her an added perspective on human suffering. She returned to school in order to receive a degree in political science from West Chester University of Pennsylvania.After obtaining her degree, she worked on the coordination of a housing program for the homeless. This opened her eyes to the hopelessness and suffering that many mothers and children too often experience. In turn, this made her recall the suffering in her native country, where social services does not exist. Mrs. Mbuy was too often saddened to hear that she was loosing nephews and nieces to child sicknesses that have been virtually eliminated in the western world. This is the reason EHOBO was founded.Mrs. Mbuy holds a position on the Board of Directors of Chester County Opportunities and Industrialization Centers (CCOIC). CCOIC's mission empowers and educates adults who are striving for a better life through a myriad of challenges.EHOBO educates and empowers mothers to properly care for their children with the means that they have available to them.The goal is to help the Congolese mothers so that their children will have a better chance of survival. One person can make a difference, but in this case two people are working together to bring about a transformation. Dr. and Mrs. Mbuy are working relentlessly to educate the more fortunate about the despair of mothers and children in the Congo in hopes of making a difference.

With our help, the mothers of these children have learned to properly nourish them. Mothers have been taught basic nutrition and food preparation so that their children did not become just a statistic.

WHAT EHOBO DOES AND HOW WE DO IT

STEP ONE: Funding is received through charitable donations and fundraising activities.

STEP TWO: Funds are dispersed as shown below among EHOBO, Inc's programs.

MICRO FINANCING PROGRAM

EHOBO, Inc's Micro Financing Program was launched in October of 2011. After a vigorous application process, ten EHOBO mother's (mother's already participating in EHOBO, Inc. programs) were selected. In country staff completed full background reports on all of the applicants, taking into consideration work experience and ability to complete the tasks they proposed in their applications.Funds were dispersed as of October 15, 2011 from EHOBO, Inc's Micro Financing Account with ProCredit Bank in DRC. These no interest loans were dispersed to mothers and are being monitored carefully by their Business Mentors. Business Mentors are EHOBO, Inc. in country staff who are monitoring, evaluating and assisting mothers with their business endeavors. Mentors report back to the EHOBO Board on a monthly basis in order to track progress of the program.Updates on specific projects that our mothers have begun will be posted to our website come January!

About

MEDICAL ASSISTANCE PROGRAM

All enrolled EHOBO, Inc. families are blessed with the ability to have their children cared for by certified practitioners in the case of a medical emergency. EHOBO frequently treats children for Malaria, Pneumonia, Cholera, Influenza, and Chronic Diarrhea. Parents of children are given emergency medical care as well as ongoing support during pregnancy. It is EHOBO, Inc's goal to provide expecting mothers with increased medical attention in the hopes of diagnosing prenatal conditions and ensuring a safe delivery for both mother and child. Currently, mothers are given childcare seminars and instruction on proper breast feeding techniques post delivery.

NUTRITIONAL PROGRAM

In conjunction with EHOBO's Educational Program, our Nutritional Program provides the mothers of our families with the materials neccesarry to provide safe food and water for their children. Mothers are given detailed demonstrations and practical training on proper food handling and meal preperation through the use of local and readily available food items. Learning how to prepare balanced meals with readily available crops empowers our families to care for themselves instead of relying on outside assistance

EHOBO Educational Program

EDUCATIONAL PROGRAM

EHOBO, Inc. is dedicated to educating the Congolese population and believes that empowerment begins with knowledge. Our educational program is a year round service offered to each of the mothers currently enrolled in EHOBO services for their families. EHOBO Families are selected carefully by in country staff who take into consideration those in most need of medical and nutritional assistance.During EHOBO educational seminars mothers are provided with a curriculum rich in the instruction of nutritional values in meal preperation and safety in food handling. The curriculum also includes an informational seminar on common medical emergencies in DRC such as signs and symptoms of food/waterborne illnesses, Malaria, Pneumococcus,Haemophilus influenzae, Cholera and Shigella Dysentery (which is responsible for 15% of deaths from diarrhoea in children according to current WHO statistics).

A Current Crisis

Child MortalitySadly, for too many Congolese children, a full stomach and good health is something that is currently out of reach for them.Accorded to United Nations Statistics, children die faster in the Congo than in all but 10 other countries in the world. If conditions remain unchanged in this country, 515 children out of 1,000 will die before turning five. In developed nations, such as the United States, the comparable statistic is six deaths for every 1,000.Food, Water and ShelterAs the rains come, one can hear the melodic dance of rain drops off of the tin roofs of the village homes. In reality, these homes are no more than mere shanties. Doorways to homes have no real doors and common bathrooms are no more than four walls and a mud floor surrounding a hole in the ground.Fresh water is non-existent or unaffordable to most— it does not run freely in the living quarters.Electrical systems, for the few who have them, consist of an extension cord plugged into a generator and threaded from the outside through a hole in the roof, then over a ceiling beam. This contraption barely provides enough energy for one light bulb let alone a cooking source.

2-year-old Emanuel is a malnourished child from a farming family. Out of

1,000 Congolese children under five, more than 50% will die of ailments such as malnutrition, AIDS, and various vector- and water-borne diseases.
